You open Instagram on your Galaxy S26 Ultra and the feed is blank. Or it spins forever. Or you see “Couldn’t refresh feed” no matter how many times you pull down.
Before you start clearing things at random, know this: there is no single cause.
Looking through Samsung Members threads from 2026, I found three very different stories. In one, an S26 Ultra owner said Instagram comments stopped loading, and later updated that Instagram fixed it on its own side after a few days. In another, a new S26 Ultra owner said apps loaded slowly across the board, no matter the network. In a third, Reels started to lag after the One UI 8.5 update. Same phone, different problems.
So this guide does not just throw a list of fixes at you. It helps you work out which kind of problem you have, then fix that one first.

The 60-second triage: which problem do you have?
Answer these three questions and you will usually know where to look:
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Start here |
| Instagram fails on Wi-Fi but works on mobile data (or the other way around) | Your network, router, DNS or VPN | Step 2 |
| Instagram also fails on a friend’s phone or on instagram.com | An Instagram-side problem | Step 1 |
| Instagram works fine on other devices but not on your S26 Ultra | App data, Samsung settings or the phone | Steps 3 to 6 |
| Everything on the phone is slow, not just Instagram | New phone setup, a software update or background settling | Step 7 |
| Only comments, Reels or one feature is broken | Often an app update or Instagram-side bug | Symptom guide below |
What “Couldn’t refresh feed” actually means
It simply means Instagram tried to fetch new posts and the request failed. The app does not tell you why. The reasons reported most often are a weak or filtered connection, a VPN, a damaged cache, a login session problem, a wrong date and time, a data-saving setting, or a problem on Instagram’s servers. The rest of this guide goes through them in a smart order: quickest and most likely first.
Step 1: Check whether Instagram itself is the problem
This takes one minute and can save you an hour.
- Open Instagram on another phone or tablet, or ask a friend whether their feed loads.
- Try instagram.com in your phone’s browser. Instagram’s own Help Center says you can always use Instagram on the web from a mobile browser.
- Check Downdetector for a spike in reports.
- Try a second Instagram account if you have one. Some users find one account loads and another shows the error, which points to the account, not the phone.
Why this matters: in April 2026, an S26 Ultra owner posted on Samsung Members that Instagram comments were hidden and mentioned seeing other S26 Ultra users report the same.
Their later update said the issue appeared to resolve after a few days, which suggests an Instagram-side problem rather than a phone setting. No amount of clearing cache would have fixed that. If other people have the same problem, waiting (and reporting it) is the right move.
Step 2: Fix the network side
Instagram’s own troubleshooting advice is to try the app on both Wi-Fi and mobile data to see whether a weak connection is the cause. Do exactly that:
- Switch networks. If it works on mobile data but not Wi-Fi, the problem is your router or Wi-Fi network. If it is the other way around, it is your mobile connection.
- Turn off your VPN. VPNs, firewalls and ad-blocking apps can stop Instagram from loading content.
- Check Private DNS. Go to Settings > Connections > More connection settings > Private DNS. If it is set to a custom hostname, switch it to Automatic or Off and test.
- Toggle airplane mode on for 10 seconds, then off.
- Restart your router, or try a different Wi-Fi network such as a hotspot from another phone.
If your phone keeps hopping between 5G and 4G in a weak area, apps can show slow or partial loading even when the signal bars look fine. A Samsung Members reply suggested this as a possible reason for slow-loading apps on an S26 Ultra. If you are in a patchy area, try turning Wi-Fi on instead, or test again somewhere with a stronger signal.
Step 3: Check Instagram’s own data-saving setting
Instagram has its own setting that reduces data use. It can slow down how quickly the feed and media refresh. Open Instagram, go to your profile > menu > Settings and privacy, find Data usage and media quality, and turn off Use less mobile data while you test.
Also try logging out and back in. This refreshes your session with Instagram’s servers and fixes the case where the login session has gone stale. Make sure you remember your password first.
Step 4: Check Samsung settings that can choke an app
These are the settings that make Samsung phones different from other Android phones.
Background usage limits (sleeping apps)
Samsung’s support pages explain that sleeping apps run in the background less often, and deep sleeping apps never run in the background and only work when you open them. If Instagram ended up on either list, it may be slow to fetch content.
- Go to Settings > Battery > Background usage limits (on some versions it is under Battery and device care).
- Open Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps. Remove Instagram from both lists if it is there.
- You can also add Instagram to Never auto sleeping apps.
Data saver
Go to Settings > Connections > Data usage > Data saver. When it is on, background data for apps is limited. Turn it off, or allow Instagram under the exceptions list.
Power saving mode
A strict battery mode can limit background activity. Turn it off for a quick test.
Date and time
Go to Settings > General management > Date and time and switch on Automatic date and time. A wrong clock can stop Instagram from loading content.
Storage
If your phone is almost full, apps may struggle to save new data. Free up some space and test again.
Step 5: Update, force stop and clear the cache
Instagram’s Help Center says that if something is not working, updating the app comes first, and that older versions may stop working properly. Do these in order:
- Update Instagram in the Google Play Store. Also check Galaxy Store updates if you use it for other Samsung apps.
- Force stop it: Settings > Apps > Instagram > Force stop. Then reopen.
- Clear the cache: Settings > Apps > Instagram > Storage > Clear cache. This removes temporary files only, and Instagram rebuilds them on the next launch. It does not log you out or delete your account.
- Restart the phone. Instagram also recommends this as a first step.
Clear data (the button next to Clear cache) is stronger. It resets the app and logs you out, so use it only if the cache clear did not help.
Step 6: Reinstall, test in Safe Mode, or try the web version
Reinstall Instagram
Instagram says your photos and profile information stay saved on your account when you delete and reinstall the app. Go to Settings > Apps > Instagram > Uninstall, then install it again from the Play Store and log in.
Test in Safe Mode
Samsung’s community staff suggest Safe Mode to see whether a third-party app is causing a problem. Press and hold the power button, touch and hold Power off, then tap Safe mode. If Instagram loads normally in Safe Mode, something you installed (often a VPN, ad blocker or “optimizer” app) is interfering. Restart normally and remove the suspect apps one at a time.
Use instagram.com or Instagram Lite meanwhile
Instagram’s Help Center lists instagram.com in a mobile browser and Instagram Lite for Android as alternatives while you sort things out.
Step 7: If the whole phone feels slow, it is probably not Instagram
A Samsung Members user with a new S26 Ultra said apps were slow to load content on any connection, and that clearing cache and reinstalling did not help. Another member pointed out two things that are worth knowing:
- New phones can feel slow for a short time after setup because background updates, indexing, and app setup may still be running.
- If you used Smart Switch to move data from an old phone, a damaged file or an incompatible app from the old phone could cause odd behaviour. The suggestion given was a factory reset, which is a big step. Only do it as a last resort, and only after you have backed up your data.
Before that, check for software updates under Settings > Software update and for a Google Play system update under Settings > About phone > Software information. Samsung staff recommended checking the Google Play system update in a thread about One UI 8.5 problems. TechCabal’s roundup of One UI 8.5 problems also notes that Samsung is expected to fix confirmed bugs through maintenance patches and Galaxy Store updates, so keeping everything updated is part of the fix.
Symptom guide: when only part of Instagram is broken
| What is wrong | What to try |
| Feed blank, but Stories or profile work | Log out and in, clear the cache, test a second account, and check Instagram’s data-saving setting |
| Comments not showing | Update Instagram, then test on another device. One S26 Ultra report from April 2026 ended with Instagram fixing it on its side |
| Reels lag or stutter after a One UI 8.5 update | Update Instagram, clear its cache, and restart. Several Samsung users reported lag after the update. Report it through Instagram if it continues |
| Icons or buttons suddenly look too big or too small | A S26 Ultra owner described this inside Instagram and in the phone’s menu. Locking and unlocking the phone made it go away for them. Report it to Samsung Members if it keeps happening |
| Old posts keep showing | Pull down to refresh, check Instagram’s data-saving setting, and clear the cache |
| Instagram asks for a selfie or verification on the new phone | Instagram may be treating the new device as unfamiliar. Try completing the check by logging in through a browser on a computer, then go back to the app |
I did not find reliable evidence that changing the S26 Ultra’s screen resolution fixes a feed that will not load. Community reports mainly describe Instagram comment or display issues, not a general feed-loading failure. Treat any resolution change as an experimental workaround only if your problem involves comments, layout, or visual glitches.
Is it really a loading problem? Some missing features only look like one
Not everything missing from Instagram is a bug. If the Notes bubbles at the top of your inbox are not appearing, that usually comes down to who follows whom and who can see them, which our guide to how Instagram Notes visibility works explains. And if you cannot see Live on an account that belongs to a teenager, age-based protections may be the reason, which we cover in our piece on why Instagram Live is not showing on a teen account. In both cases, clearing the cache will not change anything.
Report it properly if nothing works
Instagram’s Help Center says that if updating does not fix a technical problem, you can report it, and the more detail you give the better. The path is:
- Open your profile and tap the menu.
- Under More info and support, tap Help.
- Tap Report a problem and follow the prompts.
Include your phone model (Galaxy S26 Ultra), your One UI version, your Instagram version, what you were doing, and a screenshot or screen recording. You can also describe the problem to Samsung Members in the Samsung Members app, especially if other apps are acting up too.
The fix order that saves the most time
- Test on another device or instagram.com to see whether Instagram is the problem.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data; turn off VPN and custom Private DNS.
- Turn off Instagram’s “Use less mobile data” setting; log out and in.
- Remove Instagram from sleeping and deep sleeping apps; turn off Data saver and power saving.
- Update Instagram, force stop it, clear cache, restart the phone.
- Reinstall Instagram; test in Safe Mode.
- Update One UI and Google Play system update; only then think about a reset.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Instagram not loading on my Samsung S26 Ultra?
The common reasons are a network or VPN problem, a damaged app cache, strict Samsung background or data settings, an outdated app, or an issue on Instagram’s side. Testing on another device and another network tells you which one it is.
Is the S26 Ultra the cause?
Not necessarily. Some S26 Ultra owners report Instagram problems after One UI 8.5, but others traced theirs to Instagram itself, and one thread ended with Instagram fixing the problem on its side. The phone is one possible cause among several.
Will clearing the Instagram cache delete my account or photos?
No. Clearing the cache removes temporary files only. Instagram says your photos and profile information are saved on your account even if you delete and reinstall the app.
What is the difference between Clear cache and Clear data?
Clear cache removes temporary files and keeps you logged in. Clear data resets the app completely and logs you out.
Why does Instagram work on mobile data but not Wi-Fi?
That points to your router, your Wi-Fi network settings, DNS or a VPN. Restart the router, turn off Private DNS and VPN, and try another network.
How do I check if Instagram is down?
Check Downdetector, ask a friend to test, or try instagram.com on another device. If others have the same problem, it is likely on Instagram’s side.
Should I factory reset my S26 Ultra for this?
Only as a last resort, and only if many apps (not just Instagram) behave badly and everything else has failed. Back up first.
The bottom line
When Instagram’s feed will not load on your Galaxy S26 Ultra, do not start with the biggest fix. Work from the outside in:
- Check whether Instagram is down.
- Test your network.
- Review Samsung background and data settings.
- Then try clearing the cache and reinstalling Instagram.
- Install available software updates.
If the problem affects only your phone, one of these steps often resolves it—but if it continues after all of them, report it to Instagram with your device and app details.
